is it possible to define in sql server linked tables as in access?

is it possible to define in sql server linked tables to odbc data sources as it is possible to do in access?
except Access and vfp, is there another database that allows to create linked tables to odbc data sources?

I need to combine in a database native tables with odbc linked tables, but it would need to use a database more powerful that access or vfpYes, see sp_addlinkedserver (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/tsqlref/ts_sp_adda_8gqa.asp) for ideas.

You can use SQL Linked servers to achieve your goals. A Linked Server can be any ODBC-compliant database for which there are adequate drivers.

I would advise a bit of caution regarding linked servers; they work well, but use complex queries with caution as you can't always predict with certainty where the processing will occur (especially when there are joins and subqueries involved).

Is it possible to define another database to function as the tempdb instead
of the default tempdb?
I'm using sql2000

no, it's not possible unless you reinstall the SQL Server 2000 instance, as
tmpdb collation is inherited from the system databases setting and is the
same as master...
you can not define an "alternative" user defined tempdb database...
but, as SQL Server 2000 supports multiple collations both at database level
and column level, you should not have this issue...
why do you need a different collation?

Thanks for the answer.
I need a different collation as my sql setup is Latin1 and my specific DB is
Hebrew. While using temp tables in my DB I have a problem as the tempdb
doesn't understand Hebrew... Is there a solution for such problem?
Thanks,
I.P.

has been incorrectly set relative to user databases, causing join errors
with temp tables. You can rebuild the system databases, as the other posters
point out, or when the temp tables are created, you can specify an explicit
column-level collation, thus overriding the tempdb default.
Rgds,
Paul Ibison|||In addition, rather than specifiying a specific collation you can specify
database_default as the collation for columns in a temp table and they will
inherit the current database collation rather than using that if tempdb

Is it possbile to define Database server and web server on different machine (Not same phy

Hi All,

Is it possbile to define connection string for web and database server which is running on different machine. Note( Not same LAN).

E.g (My Web Server is in London and Database server in Sydney).

Please can any one help me.??

Thanks in advance...

Dj

They dont need to be on the same LAN, but you'll still need a viable WAN link.

To connect you could use the remote servers IP address with sql credentials.

data source=192.x.x.x;initial catalog=yourDatabase;user id=yourUsername;password=yourPassword;

Is database username case sensitive?

If I define a user as 'foo' in a database, are 'Foo','FOO' and other f,o,o
conbinations all the same user?
Thanks,
Bing
as far as I know, If you selected a case-sensitive sort order when you
installed SQL Server, your login ID is also case-sensitive.
