Is it possible to recover from failed sp4 installation?
I have a client who last night attempted to install sql 2000 Enterprise
Edition SP4. When running the first time through it got past the Password
Validation and moved to the Analysing and Preparing stage of the
installation. At this point it completely hung - after an hour there was
still no activity.
Now when attempting to re-install SP3a it states that a later version is
already installed and when attempting to reinstall SP4 it hangs on password
validation everytime.
This is a production server, does anyone know if it is possible to recover
from the above scenario?
Thanks
LarryJosh
I have been istalling SP4 mamy times and have never got the situation. Hmmm,
try tirn off (from the network) the server and re-install SP4

The funny thing is that @.@.version shows SP4, however it is Not SP4.

is it possible to have many publisher and one subscriber ?
can i have replication of data of all branches into one Central Server.
All branches have different branch code in each table as one of the column
of primary key.
Also is this same phenomenon posiible in ORACLE?
Please check out this article for the Multiple Publishers and Central
Subscriber Setup:
http://www.replicationanswers.com/CentralSubscriberArticle.asp
No idea if Oracle supports this natively. If however you are talking about
Oracle Publications as supported in SQL Server 2005 I'll do some checking.

Is it Possible to download mails?
I have a mail box in one machine. I just want to download all the mails
from that machine to the server which is running SQL Server 2000 and store
them in the database. Is this Possible? If so, let me know how this can be
done efficiently.
I would like to download mails automatically from that machine to the
server whenever the mails arrive.
Regards,
Sevugan.CYOu could use the XP xp_readmail, descriptions are written in the BOl for
that. For further control over the mails you should use another technology,
like something coding on your own in .NET to query the mailbox with Webdav
or something like that.

sql server mail box. How can I see the mails in the SQL Server mail box.
Can u give me a small examle? This will be very helpful for me.

Well I have an idea but i am not sure about this.
1)I think you can use the mail component and write a code or a script to
retrieve mails from the machine and make connectivity to the SQL server and
store your mails in the database
2) you can also use SQL DMO to connect to SQL Server and store your mails in
the database.

You can connect on you server with the same credential than SQL Server,
then check mail !
Pollus Brodeur|||I have started a mail session. I used xp_findnextmsg to get the next
message id.
when I executed the below statement.
EXEC xp_readmail '0x04B72100' it keeps on executing. I am not getting any
response from the server. What could be the problem.
How could I resolve this?

Is it possible to disable a specific warning ?
I'm running dtexec with the /WarnAsErrors flag, to be sure to detect any configuration warning (configuration errors are actually throwed as warning, which is not sufficient) or any other important warning.
I only get one warning (0x80047076, optimisation warning). Is there a way to disable this specific warning ?
thanks
Thibaut
You can't disable warnings in SSIS

Is it possbile to define Database server and web server on different machine (Not same phy
Hi All,
Is it possbile to define connection string for web and database server which is running on different machine. Note( Not same LAN).
E.g (My Web Server is in London and Database server in Sydney).
Please can any one help me.??
Thanks in advance...
Dj
They dont need to be on the same LAN, but you'll still need a viable WAN link.
To connect you could use the remote servers IP address with sql credentials.
data source=192.x.x.x;initial catalog=yourDatabase;user id=yourUsername;password=yourPassword;
Is it ok to run DBCC Checkdb on msdb and master?
Will I encounter any issues running DBCC CHECKDB on either msdb or master?
Thanks!
I just wouldn't recommend using any of the [REPAIR_...] options.
It is a good idea to do so before a backup to have confidence that the backup is ok. (About the backup if there is a problem - and alert the DBA.

won't be renaming the server as I know this can cause problems with the SQL

What kind of problems would I run into? Any steps that need to be followed?

ThanksMichael,
From SQL 7.0, this article describes some consequences:

However, this article suggest that you not do that if you have a choice.

Thank you for using MSDN Newsgroup! It's my pleasure to assist you with your issue.
From your description, I understand that you would like to promote you SQL 2000 Server to a
Domain Controller for a new domain. However, you didn't point out the target of this promotion.
Based on my experience, if you promote a SQL Server to a new domain, the most common
problem you will face is orphan logins and some login permission problems. You can use
sp_grantlogin to manually add the logins into the new domain, and use sp_grantdbaccess to
associate the group members with a user identifier (ID) in each database they need to
access.
Here I provide you with a simple example:
============================USE master
GO
-- Authorize all members of NETDOMAIN\Managers to connect
-- using Windows Authentication.
sp_grantlogin 'NETDOMAIN\Managers'
GO
-- Make pubs the default database for Michael and Northwind the default database for Billy.
sp_defaultdb 'NETDOMAIN\Michael', 'pubs'
sp_defaultdb 'NETDOMAIN\Billy', 'Northwind'
USE pubs
GO
-- Grant a specific member Michael of the group access to
-- pubs with a specific user.
sp_grantdbaccess 'NETDOMAIN\Michael', 'Michael'
USE Northwind
GO
-- Grant a specific member Billy of the group access to
-- Northwind with a specific user.
sp_grantdbaccess 'NETDOMAIN\Billy', 'Billy'
=============================
As to renaming the server, there is also an easy way to perform like that:
-- For a default instance:
sp_dropserver <old_servername>
go
sp_addserver <new_servername> , local
go
-- For a named instance:
sp_dropserver <old_servername\instancename>
go
sp_addserver <new_servername\instancename> , local
go
Michael, does this answer your question? Please apply my suggestion above and let me
know if it helps you resolve your problem.

Is it easy to upgrade from MSDE to Full blown SQL v2000
Hi,
Noob here....
Got server running app approaching 2gig limit using MSDE version of SQL. I've purchased the full version and just checking if there is anymore to it than inserting the CD and letting it find the MSDE version and upgrade it.
Also, don't remember getting a keycode with the CD - is this right?
Thanks for help :)

|||I have gone from 2000 msde to 2000 developers edition and never had a problem.
Do a backup of your databases and give it a try.
|||I wish I had the same easy experience. So far my upgrade from MSDE 2k to full SQL never gives me the "Upgrade" option. I have to install a new instance.
This is in the course of migrating a SharePoint Services installation from the default MSDE database to SQL.
As this test server had SharePoint portal uninstalled and SQL 2k developer uninstalled, then SharePoint Services by themselves re installed, I wonder if the install wizard just somehow does not see the MSDE instance.
My co workers think I am making this up.. Any ideas as to why no upgrade?

Hi,
I'm running SQL 2K5 with SP1.
Whenever I try to run an import from Oracle linked server to my sql server (of course, there are no problems with the import), and if I try to expand any of the folders like Tables, Programmability -> Stored procedures, functions...............I'm not able to see any tables and SPs etc.
It times out and displays error message "Lock request time out period exceeded. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 1222).
The linked server (Oracle) import takes 30 to 40 mins and each time it only touches a single table and I don't think this should cause that kind of error but it is.
I'm running this import from Management Studio.
Anybody has any thoughts?
Thanks,
Siva.
SQL Server Management Studio needs some locks to provide the listings. Certain types of data import processes can block other access to the database.
If you can use another method to import data that doesn't lock so much, you can eliminate this problem. I don't know any specific solutions, unfortunately.

|||Hi Ryan,
Thanks for the info.
I did couple of tests on this. It looks like this problem is happening only when importing data but not when querying the linked server inspite of querying also takes lot of time.
Then I tried this import using SSIS and I'm not getting those problems mentioned earlier.
But to be frank, getting data from linked server is very straight forward (when you don't have to do any manipulations with data) and easy compared to SSIS (in my case).
Hopefully, Microsoft will look into this.
Thanks,
Siva.

Is bug described in article 872843 really fixed?
Server 2003 with replication.
This morning, my log reader agents failed. In the server log, I saw the
following messages:
SQL Server Assertion: File: <logscan.cpp>, line=1985
Failed Assertion = 'startLSN >= m_curLSN'.
...
SQL Server Assertion: File: <logscan.cpp>, line=2223
Failed Assertion = 'm_noOfScAlloc == 0'.
KB article 872843 says that this is supposed to be fixed in SP4... is it?
Or did it come back in the AWE hotfix?
Regards,
Jonathan

Is Arcserve 2000 backing up my SQL server properly?
is running SQL server. It seems that at the beginning of the backup
cycle the files are skipped due to a sharing violation (I mean the
database files). Later during the part when the SQL agent backs up
files it seems to back up fine. Is this normal or is something wrong
here. Below is a log...sorry if it is a little long. Thanks so much

20030701 012709 16 Reschedule Backup Job for 7/02/03 at 1:00 AM.You can't normally backup the database files with ArcServe since they are
always in use. I believe they have a way to bypass that but then what good
is backing up a file that is constantly changing. You can't restore the db
using these backups made from Arcserve since they are not consistent. What
you can do is basically one of 2 things. Either use the SQL Server plug-in
for ArcServe to have it issue the equivalent of a sql server backup or don't
even attempt to backup the database files with Arcserve and have it backup
the files generated by the SQL Server backup.

> 20030701 012709 16 Reschedule Backup Job for 7/02/03 at 1:00 AM.|||Hello,
Arcserver has an Open File Agent, as do most of these large backup software
products. This is supposed to allow the backing up of files that Andrew
says are always in use. It is my experience that this can be a hit and miss
affair and is one that I am not comfortable with. Yes I have been bitten by
it. I always now backup using SQL Server to a .bak file and have Arcserve.*
back that file up.

: You can't normally backup the database files with ArcServe since they are
: always in use. I believe they have a way to bypass that but then what
good
: is backing up a file that is constantly changing. You can't restore the
db
: using these backups made from Arcserve since they are not consistent.
What
: you can do is basically one of 2 things. Either use the SQL Server
plug-in
: for ArcServe to have it issue the equivalent of a sql server backup or
don't
: even attempt to backup the database files with Arcserve and have it backup
: the files generated by the SQL Server backup.
-- Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1158|||Yes that is what I meant by bypass. Poor choice of word but it will allow
it to backup up the file anyway. That does no one any good since it is in
an inconsistent state database wise.

to backup those files (in the beginning) if you know they will only fail and
are useless anyway? And as nttp states, it wouldn't be a bad idea to
restore your backups somewhere to see if it's really doing what you hope it
is.
