Is it possible to recover a dropped table?
Accidentally I have dropped a table and that is the main table for my application.
I dont have a backup of it. Is there any way to recover it.Please help me guys.
Thanks,
Kumar. With no backups you have to hope the data is recoverable from the transaction logs with a tool likewww.lumigent.com offers, but even this does not offer 100% certainty of recovering the table.
is it possible to re-build index without logging?
i have a vendor application on one of my sql servers.
this application has many tables, and each tables have many indexes. it's
very write intensive (because when a record is inserted, it's insereted to
many many other tables, and that behavior can't be changed). the problem is
page split happened often, but when i tried to reindex tables once a week,
the log file run out of space.
can anyone offers some good solutions to my problem?
thank you!!
Steve
You can try changing the recovery mode to Bulk Logged or Simple and see if
that helps. Do only a few tables at a time and backup the log in between.

Is it possible to read data from a table with exclusive lock ?
Hello,
We currently use SQL Serv 2000 with an ERP application and VB applications.
Both system work with the same database & tables but the ERP application seems to put exclusive lock on all tables it needs during processes. So our VB applications are not able to read these data and we receive TIMEOUT error.
What can I do ?
thank you
Nico
Is the ERP a third party app? If so, since it is the one doing the locking, you will need to talk to that vendor and see if they can/will do a more permissive lock.
Since that is 'unlikely to happen' (vendors are funny that way) You might increase the timeout on your connection object to see if waiting a few more seconds will allow the lock to clear.
Your next option is to add a transaction to the process and set the isolation level of the transaction to "readuncommited". This will allow you to 'by pass' the exclusive lock, but the RISK is that you may get obsolete (incorrect) data.

sqlIs it possible to prevent databases from being copied?
Hi,
We have a point of sale application (C# .NET 2.0) and a Sql Server 2005 database back end.
Our customers are concerned that employees could create a backup of the SQL Server database (or even of the MDF file) and use it to steel customer data.
Very often, the application is running on a single PC in a shop using Sql Server Express Edition 2005 under Windows XP. The users usually log on as local administrator. It's hard for us to force our customers to change their local security policies.
Ideally, I would like some form of security mechanism that prevents a backup from being restored on to another PC without either a password or some other form of authentication.
Is this possible?
Regards,
Sigol.
I'm assuming you meant 'steal' (to take), rather than 'steel' (to harden).
There are several issues.
1. As you noted, a backup 'could' be restored on another server. Various third party backup programs allow passwords and encryption for backups. Any SQL Admin can create a backup that can be restored elsewhere.
2. A SQL administrator could take the database 'offline' for a few minutes and copy the data file (*.mdf)
3. A local administrator could shut down the SQL Service for a few minutes and copy the data file (*.mdf).
4. Even with an Encrypted database, or tables, or even specific columns, a local SQL Administrator can usually get around the protections.
Don't allow any local administrators to be in the SQL Admins role.
So if you are concerned about protecting a database, the 'best' solutions, in a situation where you can't control the local administrators, is to look into database encryption using encryption keys, or better yet, certificates.
|||Thank you for your comments, Arnie. This was very helpful to me.

Is it possible to have SQL send an email out based on a value in a table?
I'm working on a trouble ticket application and would like to add one more bit of functionality to the system:
When a new trouble ticket is created via the application front end (ASP.NET web application) the system sends an email to an appropiate party indicating that a new ticekt has been issued and needs to be responded to. The user must then log into the system to see the new ticket. The ticket is of course stored in the database (SQL Sever 2000). My question is, whether it is possible to tell SQL server to automatically send emails on a set time interval as long as their are tickets in the database that have a status of new?
ThanksThere is a SQL Server extended stored procedure, xp_Sendmail, that will allow your SQL code to send mail (presuming the SQL Mail agent is configured and running).|||You can also use CDONTS from a stored procedure if you don't have SQL Mail installed - http://support.microsoft.com/view/tn.asp?kb=312839|||Thanks all. I have a procedure that uses CDONTS and it works fine. now I gotta figure out hot to schedule it to run based on a field in a database. But hopefully that should be easy.

All branches have different branch code in each table as one of the column

Also is this same phenomenon posiible in ORACLE?

Is it possible to have a website remotely hosted, which would access local database?
Hi everybody,
Currently we have a MIS application, developed in VB 6.0 - SQL Server 2000 platform, which is used by around 60 users in our office.
We are planning to host a website remotely, which would allow clients to place orders, track order status etc. on it.
Would it be possible to access our local SQL database from the remote website?
utpal_nandi:
Would it be possible to access our local SQL database from the remote website?
I'm afraid, it won't be possible. You should host the database also.
|||Well I guess in theory that's not impossible. It might be impracticle though...
When you say "our local SQL database", is that hosted on a dedicated box? You could open that up for remote (read: internet) connections. That would allow your web server to access it.
However, that probably won't save you any time and will deprive you of an in house server that could be used for testing, etc. Also, it'll probably be slower for the webserver to query your sql server over the internet than it would be to query another server on its own network (if you hosted the database at the same place you host the website).
So you asked if it would be possible, and the answer is yes, but I wouldn't actually recommend it.
|||What do you mean by "dedicated box"? Do you mean dedicated server? We will be having a dedicated server on Windows 2000 Datacenter edition on which the database as well as the web server (IIS) would be installed. The web server would be opened up for remote connections through a static IP.
Regarding the time factor, 90% of our data entry and database access would be done by our office staff on our local database, which would be faster than doing the same on a remote database. Moreover in case of a remote database, if our internet connection fails, our work would get held up. Only 10% of data entry and database access would be done by our clients in case of a local database, which would be slow and could be alternatively done by our local staff in case the internet connection fails.
|||
Hi,
Regarding the time factor, 90% of our data entry and database access would be done by our office staff on our local database, which would be faster than doing the same on a remote database.
From your description, I think that you can make your MIS system connect to the local database first, and then update the data to the live server in a schedule plan. To achieve this, one of the ways is to create a step job in SQLServer Agent, and make your remote database be synchronized with your local database server.
Besides, if you are using Visual Studio Team Suite, you can start a Database project, in that project, you can deploy your local database to your remote server in an easy way, meantime, schema comparison and data comparison between databases on different servers are enabled, you can make different databases be synchronized more easier than before.
Thanks.

is it possible to connect to SQL Express without network?
I have notebook, client server application and sql express sp2 on this notebook.
Also, I know domain user login/password,
but I don't know any local user name/password
and I don't know any sql server user name/password.
Domain user is not a local administrator on this notebook.
When notebook connected to the office LAN I am working good with my app-> my sql express as a domain/user.
I'd like to work at home too. I can logon to the system (XP SP2) using domain account when notebook has no network connection. (probably OS caches something)
Is it possible to work with sql express using domain login when no network connection?
PS. old version of this software used MSDE 2000 and it was possible(!).
Thank you.
Yes. SQL Server will still work the same as when you are connected to the office LAN.
Since you log on with your domain credentials (they are cachd on the laptop), the same credentials are used to gain entry to SQL Server.

Is it possible to connect to a SQL Server 2005 database usine asp.net v1.1
Hi,
I am having difficulties connecting to a SQL Server 2005 database from an ASP.NET windows application.
Is there any difference in the way the connection string is written when connecting to SQL Server 2005
I have the following connections in my App.config file :
<addkey="Sql2000ConnString"value="Data Source=xxx.xxx; Initial Catalog=Sql2000DB; User ID=UID;Password=Pwd;"/>
<addkey="Sql2005ConnString"value="Data Source=xxx.xxx; Initial Catalog=Sql2005DB;User ID=UID; Password=Pwd;"/>
Every time I run my application it crashes when I try to connect to SQLServer2005 - The connection to the Sql2000 database works without any errors.
Do I need to write the connection differently??
Thanks

Is it possible to connect a SQL server database to any NNTP server
This would mean re-writing the NNTP server application so that it stores and
retrieves the messages in the database rather than having an archive
facility?
You should therefore need to either look for a NNTP package that already
uses SQL Server (such as the one mentioned in this thread
http://tinyurl.com/dmeds) or write your own data access routines for an
existing package.

Yes, I think so. However, I am not sure which books I need to read or which
sections of MSDN I need to refer to for learning how to create such server
applications.

I have been using Lyris ListManager for many years which already has this
functionality. However, I am just learning VS 2005 so I thought a good way
to learn would be to try to create such an application on my own.

Don't multi-post. See response in .server.
David|||If you are using user rights with an application and not an application
role, then there is no way for the server to differentiate between a
user using product x or product y; it simply sees a request for data
from a user.
However, if your application can be re-tooled to use an application
role instead, then that changes things drastically. Of course, that
limits your applications ability to inherit from Active Directory, so
it may not be a viable solution.

I can't change permissions asigned to domain group to which they
belong.
I can't change application in any way, i don't have acess to use
application role. I can't touch application. For me the best solution
would be if in query analyzer is check button "read only", and i could
use it ;)
I need to give users read only access using isql.
M.
|||I believe that the closest you can come is to create triggers on your tables from which you check
the application name (APP_NAME()) and if not expected, you rollback inside the trigger. This will
not prevent a bad seed from writing an app, setting the expected application name and do the bad
operations, though.

In this situation users should be granted Read permissions only, and in the
application, they can acquire different permissions by running
sp_setapprole.

I can't change permissions asigned to domain group to which they
belong.
I can't change application in any way, i don't have acess to use
application role. I can't touch application. For me the best solution
would be if in query analyzer is check button "read only", and i could
use it ;)
I need to give users read only access using isql.
M.|||I believe that the closest you can come is to create triggers on your tables
from which you check
the application name (APP_NAME()) and if not expected, you rollback inside t
he trigger. This will
not prevent a bad seed from writing an app, setting the expected application
name and do the bad
operations, though.

Don't set the grid to allow updates. You can probably find some code for
something like that in the samples.

Is it possible ...?
I have users in domain group who use application which uses sqlserve, they
have rights to insert, update, delete. I want some of the members of this
domain group to connect directly to the database using query analyzer but
with right only to read and they still of course can use application and
have full rights.
I can't change application, i don't want to crate another users with
different rights.
I want the same user to have different rights using application and query
analyzer.
Is it possible ? Maybe something similar...

Is it possible
I have a .NET Web application that points to quite a few SQL reports.
Here is what I am looking to do:
I have a list of values that will change quite frequently. Say this is the list for example
A
B
C
D
E
In my report I need to say "where MyField = 'A' OR MyField = 'B' OR MyField = 'C'" .... etc.
The problem here is the list above is going to vary in value and *in number of parameters*. It won't always be 5 parameters...sometimes 6, etc. I won't know at compile time how many parameters.
***Is there a way to build the query for the Report in Visual Studio and have the report use that query for its dataset?***
Basically in Visual Studio I would say:
myQuery = "select whatever from wherever where MyField = FirstListValue "
While not at end of list
myQuery += "OR" + nextValue
End While
Has anyone done this before?
Are you using SQL Server 2005 and are you saying that it is a different number of values that can be in the same field? If so, just us a multi value parameter and in your SQL in the report add the clause: and MyField in (@.MyParm)
Then pass the values to the report in the MyParm parameter.
|||I'm fairly sure that is what I need. I'll give it a try and let you know how it turns out. Thanks!Friday, March 9, 2012
Is it mandatory to install "SQL server client" to connect to server that has "SQL
Hello,
My database is on the server. I have a vb.net application installed on a client's machine. The problem is I am not able to connect to server from my application.
I have figured out that "SQL server client" is not installed on client's machine.
So is there any settings/utility available using which without installing SQL client I can connect to Server.
Any views/help would be apprecciated.
You do not need to install anything on the client to connect to RS. What error are you recieving?|||
The server machine contains the database and the vb.net application is installed on the client's machine. So my question is in order to connect to the database that resiedes on the server, should client's machine also need "sql server client" or is there any way in which the application can connect to database without "sql client" on client machine.
This has nothing to do with reporting services.
Thanks

This is a report server forum, so I assumed the question was about RS. Assuming you are using .Net, the answer would still be no, client tools are not required on the client for an application.
